In a very spirited welcome, the Punjab Jr Girls Basketball Team and the coaches were received at Guru Nanak Stadium with beating of drums and garlands when they returned from Indore after winning Gold title .Punjab Basketball Association and its district unit (DBA), celebrated the occasion as ‘Dhheyan Di Lohri’ encircling the Lohri fire when the girls ,their parents, coaches and officials of PBA & DBA did Bhangra in jubilation. Winning girls were each given good quality winter wear, tracksuits and cash prizes as ‘Victory Lohri Shagun’ By PBA to the players. Present on the occasion were Yurinder Singh Hayer a Sr.VP of PBA, Vijay Chopra treasurer PBA,Parminder Singh Heer SP (City 1),international basketball player ,Teja Singh Dhaliwal Gen Sec of PBA, Ravinder Singh ,district sports officer, athletics coach Sanjeev Kumar and many officials of DBA. Mr Hayer especially praised the girls team coach Ms.Saloni and other coaches Rajinder Singh ,Davinder Singh Dhindsa, Ravinder Gill, Narinder Kumar, Amarjot Singh and Sukhvinder Singh. The coach Saloni said that she is overjoyed that she has coached the winning team at the Ludhiana Basketball Academy Centre from where she herself learnt basketball when in 2003 she played from Punjab team which won bronze medal last, but now she will be known as coach of gold medal winning team. National Junior Basketball Junior Girls title for Punjab has after a gap of 29 years when they last won gold in 1992 played at Ludhiana . Punjab Girls now beat Rajasthan 57-52 .
An eminent Punjabi poet Gurbhajan Gill termed this victory as a big morale booster for Punjab’s girls on the eve of Lohri. Vijay Chopra distributed sweets and Brij Goyal of DBA thanked the parents for reposing faith in the sporting talent of their daughters who are trained by dedicated coaches.
